Bottom bracket bearing installation?

I never installed a bottom bracket before.  Do the bearing "balls" face inside or outside.  How tight do I thread it on.  I did it by hand and I don't have enough threads to get the washer(spacer) and nut on.  I hope this made sense.  I did a search and couldn't find a good diagram showing the installation of a loose bearing bottom bracket install.  Can anybody help a brother out.

Re: Bottom bracket bearing installation?

so the "balls" will face the inside, how tight do i tighten it.  I should just take it to my builder.  Here are some pics i just took.  Is this correct.

Re: Bottom bracket bearing installation?

Does this side unscrew or is it one piece.   I can't get it to move.

Re: Bottom bracket bearing installation?

You have the bearings backwards. Balls face in, or open bearing cage faces in, the way you have them sitting on the spindle in the one pic is the correct way..... And the race DOES come ff that spindle

Also, as I tell my kids, its YOUR bike, YOU learn to fix it. Dont take it to someone else, its a bike, not a Ferrari engine... wink

Re: Bottom bracket bearing installation?

umm hope its not the beer but i have to say the bearings in the cups are the correct way. see how the washer on the spindle is tapered and concave? that is where the balls sit and where the balls roll.

Re: Bottom bracket bearing installation?

Damn, I can't get the race off on the drive side.  Here is my problem.  I get the bottom bracket in the bike.   I don't have enough threads left to put the ring and the locking nut.  If I don't use the ring and get about 2 or 2 1/2 turns on the locking nut.  Anybody have any suggestions.  If I can get the race off on the drive side and unscrew a couple turns will this give me more threads on the non drive side.
Do both races go on the same way and tighten the same direction?

Re: Bottom bracket bearing installation?

fit the spindle onto the drive side crank, with the chainring, and tighten the drive side race, then grease the drive side bearing, and fit the spindle. this should set the races at the correct distance, and then it should work fine

Re: Bottom bracket bearing installation?

you shouldnt have to, just put the crank on, and see whether the race needs tightening, if not, then something else is the issue
