sorry for the hype and then the delay.  I know a lot of you are looking forward to this and it will be here.  Some items, beyond Nate's control, have held things up, but should be resolved today (hopefully  )

DMP367, you can say whatever you want, like your doing now, but will be banned for violating the rules and lose your $20.  Right now all you will lose is your free membership.  Either way, both are for good.

Superbike, that is correct, but there is much more to this site than the classified section.

I think we're going to lose a number of folks that only sell things once or twice a year.  Times are tough, and that $20 will push some folks elsewhere.  The vast majority of folks aren't legitimately making money in the classifieds as it is.  I bought a seatpost for $7 that had 5$+ of shipping costs on it.

A solution!
I think we should allow non-pros 2 'for sale' threads per year or something similar.  That would keep the small timers here (we definitely want that), and keep the classifieds what they are today.  Without that, we run the risk of turning the classifieds into a place mainly geared towards the high volume sellers who can easily justify the $20 and make it up through their volume.

thanks for the suggestion. i'd say this is something we can consider when we retool the For Sale section to not be part of the forums, but a specifically coded section for selling with more features, and therefore easier ability to offer more granular permissions like you're suggesting.

as it is, i'd have to hack into punbb and do all sorts of checks and custom sql statements to offer such a feature. i think it makes more sense to put my time towards making For Sale much better for everybody, including the folks that are chipping in towards the cost of site maintenance and development.

I feel where you are coming from.  Perhaps we could take a look at creating a seperate non-pro classified section like vintagebmx instead of trying to integrate it so we don't lose traffic and for sale posts to other sites.  This might actually make it better for everybody, as opposed to shutting out the non-pros from posting.  Often the one-offs are the best deals posted on the forum as well.  I'd hate to lose that, and ultimately see BMXM lose traffic.  I'm all for helping out, so let me know what I can do

i agree with the idea, but it's not just a matter of making a separate forum -- it's a matter of hacking into punbb to check what a user's group is, if they've posted in the last month in this particular forum, and show an error based on that, link to a page that explains the policies, not to mention have something else for the (already overwhelmed) mods to watch over, explain, and field complaints about.

it makes much more sense to me to code something that works much better than forum software to list things for sale, and while i'm coding it, i can work in something like you're asking for.

I thought I liked the idea of the pro member for selling stuff. It made sense to me.

But the Wanted to buy section? really?

Generally I'm a buyer, not a seller. But I'd have to upgrade just to find out if someone had the specific item I wanted. The amount of time it would take me to search through the for sale items to find what I'm looking for just isn't worth it. More likely, someone has what I need, and would part with it if they knew it was an easy sale. Who knows.

I'm now more likely going to go to ebay or my LBS to get what I need. That is too bad because I likes supporting members here.

the reason we decided to include the entire classified section is from past experience.  It seems when we make a rule or a limit to something, there is a group that will circumvent the rules, work around it to make it better for them.  In this case, what we expected is that same group to try to slip for sale items in on the other parts of the classifieds (i know, hard to imagine, right.)
