1978 Redline Proline
1978 Redline Proline
5" head tube
In 1978 the ProLine was modified with a stronger rear dropout, lighter forks, 5" headtube, and geometry change for better handling. The frame was only offered in white in '78.
Redline began to expand their product offerings with the famous V bars and redefined Redline Proline double clamp stem thoroughly tested by Byron Friday. The stem features a 45 degree angle brace allowing for more surface area to be welded for strength. The clamps in '77 were the same as the '75 prototype stem but Redline modified to increase the size for more gripping power, strength, and stamped for Redline quality.
The bike features era correct parts and the Webco Magnesium wheels are original with the introduction of Carlisle Aggressor MX front tire.

Hope you all enjoy another historical Redline ride.

Re: 1978 Redline Proline
Love the balance of colors to make it classic Redline black, red, and white. Webco mags scream 1978 plus those DG grips weren't too common, they were small and hurt your hands.
Did Redline have a seat post clamp?
Way cool build! ![]()

Re: 1978 Redline Proline
The 1975 prototype Redline stem on my squareback had a matching seat post clamp yet it was never mass produced.
Late in 1977 Redline modified the prototype clamps to beefier Redline stamped clamps. Thought I would match the '78 year with a modified stem clamp to fit the 7/8" seat post. Took some grinding and built-in the clamping system so it looks SANO.
Yes, the DG grips a trick but are not hand friendly ![]()

Re: 1978 Redline Proline
When the '78 catalog came out it states white only.
Eventually Redline offered colors to improve ProLine sales. Overall there were 10,000 frames sold since 1975.
There were no complete Redlines offered until 1980.

I was told mine is a 78'. Is this not the case? AFAIK, it was a complete.

Re: 1978 Redline Proline
Your rear dropouts look like '78 but the picture is a little grainy.
Built my share of Redlines in the 70's and we built them from the ground up. In 1980 we received the first complete bikes from Redline which made it easier to unbox, dial it, and sell it.
Most likely yours was a frame and fork built up with parts at a bike shop. The current picture of the bike shows non era correct parts for 1978 and never seen a Redline with two front chain rings.
Development of two speed systems began around '79 and the Browning system was the most popular and Suntour also came out with one but they never gained mass popularity.

Yeah, no the seat post, seat, pedals, and cranks, are not original AFAIK. Couldve have been a shop builder. I can get better pics. Anything other than the dropouts?

Re: 1978 Redline Proline
OK, JT... What the hell is going on here?
I'm the only guy allowed to put black Webco mags on the old school Redlines!!! I thought we were cool on that... And what's up with those DG Octopus grips? Sheesh... I thought I was one of the only guys to have a pair of those! Now you whip out a set?
I'm very jealous and angry now and I'm certainly not happy with this new build of yours!
Ha-ha-ha! Kidding all the way... Great build my man. This bike is rockin' into outer space!
Are you gonna build a new drum kit too now to make me jealous? ![]()

LOL to the max!!!
I was savin' the Redlines for when Stu would talk at Rockford and it finally happened. Brought them all out and it was fun to finally display and share all the Redline models in one spot.
Didn't you hear, Linn Kastan was into drums and is giving me a prototype squareback kit!!!!
