1987 Haro Team Master

My Holiest of Holy Grails

Hello everyone!!
Quick story...  bought a Haro Master off of CL back a few months ago...  Original Black/Coral.  When I got it, I was planning on stripping it down, and building an 87 Team Master.  I didn't get much good feedback on doing this.  Everyone wanted me to keep it original...  which now I understand why a little bit more.
So, Chromey had mentioned that the Black/Coral Master is one of his Holy Grail bikes...  so a couple months later, I PM Chromey, and ask if he would be interested in a trade for a nice clean, stripped Master...  well, he just happened to have one.  Let the trade begin!!
I sent Chromey my Master, and he was super awesome and saved me the time/money by sending the frame right to Chip, to get the powder done for me.  Chip was really cool to wait for me to ship some other parts to him, and ship it all back together.  This is really what this site is about.  Good people, helping each other out!
The 87 Haro Team Master has been my favorite bike by far since I was about 10 years old.  A friend of mine had one...  well, he was about 7 years older than me, and was totally my BMX idol.  He had an 8-9 foot halfpipe in his back yard, and basically his own parking lot at his house, and we all went out to his house to watch him and his friends get some air, and do some flatland.  He was the one out of his group of friends that wasn't a jack a$ to me and my friends.  You know, they made us sweep the lot before they rode, wipe down there bikes, get them sodas, and all that stuff.  He always stuck up for us, and always invited us out to his place.  He would even give us quarters, when he would see us at the "Ice Creame Shoppe", so we could play Super Mario Bros.
Anyway, I always looked up to him, and he rode this bike...  so I needed one...  now I finally have it...
You will notice that it isn't perfect, era correct, NOS, or any of that jazz...  this is my interpretation of the bike.  I am absolutely stoked, and I had to show it off even though I still have a couple things left to do.
Thanks to Chromey, and Chip for making this happen for me...  this IS my Holiest of all Holy Grails!  Thank you guys!

Re: 1987 Haro Team Master

Really great story and Matt is definitely the man! Great guy to deal with, ride with and talk with! Now to the bike...Awesome! This is one of my favorite colors (after the mint teal one and before the coral black). This looks to be coming along nicely and you only need a few more parts for this. Keep posting as it gets finished and add the finishing photos to both the thread and the bike submission. Nice job!

Wanted to buy: A'me Unitrons in Grey over Black or Black over Red (mint or NOS).

Re: 1987 Haro Team Master

Oh man, I didn't see this when it was first posted to the museum.

Cail.. I should be the one to that YOU... not the other way around. smile
Seriously - no need to thank me. I honestly feel like I owe you... for letting me save some survivor paint on the ol' Coral one. Rather than me having to send mine out to be painted.  Either way it was going to chip..l. I'm super glad it went ther - got some fluorescent Yellow Team treatment, then sent to you.

It really worked out perfectly, and you've done it total justice the way you're building it. smile

BTW - the odyssey tires look great on there. That means you're gonna ride it right?
Let's get some riding pics up next to the bike pics smile

Thanks you again!
If you come to Brian P's party. I'll be pouring all of your beers.

Rides really nice, but I just can't get the back brake dialed in...  I think I need new springs, so we will see how that works.  Going to scuff up the fronts, and really clean the rims so the stick so I can actually try some stuff...

My wife and I took the Sport and Master out to a parade on Sunday...  people were blown away, lots of good stories....  best part, when talking to a couple, I scored another Master, and a Sport for DIRT!

Going to ride them around more me thinks...  big_smile

Re: 1987 Haro Team Master

Spring of 1987, I'm sitting in class (6th grade if memory serves) pretending to listen the teacher. I see her face clearly but for the life of me, I can' t remember her name. The cool kid in the class is sitting next to me thumbing through a well used issue of BMX PLUS!. I barely knew anything about freestyle/BMX and that point and nobody in my neighborhood did either. The cool kid had an entry level Mongoose Expert and it might as well have been a Lamborghini Countach to us. He's flipping through pages while I soak in as much as I can from my peripheral. And there it was ... a two page Haro ad featuring the 87 Team Master. Ever had a defining moment in your life? Me, I've had a few here and there. That was one of them. Overly dramatic, maybe, but it was real. I had never seen anything like it before; it was the most beautiful, awesome thing I'd ever seen. The cool kid notices me looking and without saying a word, he lifts the magazine up so I can get a better look. He points at the bike and taps his finger against the page. I nod with approval of the utmost sincerity. I don't remember what issue of BMX PLUS! it was, I don't remember the teachers name and I don't remember the cool kid's name ( John something or another). But I remember that bike.

Wow, great story!  I remember having my catalogs stuffed in my Trapper Keeper, always looking at them while some random math, english, or whatever class was going on.

Good stuff!  smile
