1987 Haro Sport

1987 Haro Sport

So here is my 87 Haro Sport that used to be the custom green color re-done as the factory white instead.  This is originally the color I was going to build this bike as when I bought it from www.ajkbikes.com .  When I first built this bike I powdered it bright green but I always felt that I kind of went over board on the blue components so I decided to tame it down a bit.  I decided to keep it simple this time.

I decided to upgrade a few things and get rid of a few things.  I decided to simplify things by going with a 86 Sugino one piece crank that I had re-chromed and topped them off with some NOS Shimano PD-MX15 pedals.  I also upgraded the tires to Haro Directional 1.75" all black tires and a NOS fluted seat post as well.  I was never happy with the kneesavers so I decide to go with some new school chrome bars that I picked up from Justin (porkchoppz).  I had the decal set printed on clear by AJ because I like decals printed on clear and I also wanted a Team decal as well.  I got rid of a lot of the blue components like the grips, the chain and also had the Haro stem powdered black as well.  I also decided to powder the forks black because I really like the look of the all black front end with just the top of the bars being chrome.  There is something about that whole color scheme that stands out and has a more bold look to it in my personal opinion.  All of the other parts remain the same from when it was the "green machine".  The only blue components I decided to keep were the seat and the seat post clamp.  I wanted just a touch of blue to tie in with the decals.

This is my first bike I've built with one piece cranks since 1988 and I really like them a lot.  I love the simplicity of them and the way they feel when you ride them.  They also lightened the bike up quite a bit which is nice touch.  Oh, almost forgot that I also added some ARAYA rim decals to the Rhino Lite rims.  I removed the Rhino decals and added some old school flair to them which are the same colors as the frame so it seemed like a natural finishing touch.

It rides good, it's lighter, less flashy and I'm much happier with this build.

Now this is a great looking bike. Reminds me of a friend's bike from BITD. I think the blue grips would also work with this build.

Great looking bike--I always liked the white sports. I agree with you on the one piece cranks--they're all I ever use (and can afford to use!)

Yeah I was thinking of maybe trying those blue grips again.  They are nice and do match pretty close to the seat, decals and clamp.  smile

Great bike Jason.  A couple weeks ago, I decided I was going with white on my 87 now.  It was the og color and you don't see many of them.  I was worried I wouldn't be able to match the Team aqua either.  Anyway, I think our bikes will almost be twins.  I should have the frame back anyday now so I can continue my restoration thread.  Looks great man!  This has me excited about getting mine back and putting the thing together!

Hey Thanks Erich.  Yeah, I agree 100% on the fact that they're aren't many white ones around.  There isn't many in the museum at all.  In fact I don't even think there is a white Master in the museum that I know of.  Definately a cool looking color combo.  I can't wait to see yours with all the custom tweaks.  Should look pretty cool.  smile

Re: 1987 Haro Sport

I've said it before, that color combo is my favorite ever on Sports, and you made yours look AWESOME!!! I sold my Trick Star in 87 to get one of those and it got stolen within a month or two. I love the Team sticker on there too. Funny enough when mine got stolen we got insurance money for it and I was able to get the turquoise team model back then, but I always liked the white better though. I'm going to get another one of those someday.

Great bike!!!! Those white/black/blue ones always make me smile. big_smile

I got them from Justin (porchoppz) and I think they're no names but I sure like them a lot.  They feel good.  Nice width and height. Oh and a darn good price!!!   smile

Jason - very nice job here! It's like night and day from the old look. I love the all black front end - great touch!!! The haro tires are much nicer as well and even the 1 piece cranks look cool. This color combination is very sweet indeed. Love this build!

Hey thanks guys!  Hey Marcus, so what's your next build going to be?  It's going to be hard to top that GT you just built huh?  Man that bike is sick!  Once again, you did a great job on that bike man.  smile

Thanks Jason! It means a lot to get those types of compliments from great builders such as yourself. I'm currently working on two RL-20II's (one show and one rider). The show type bike will be an all white F/F and the rider will be a chrome one. You're right about topping the GT. lol I hope I can live up to it! big_smile

Hey Marcus, good to hear man!  I look forward to seeing them built up.  Redlines are awesome.  I'll be working on a 87 Mongoose Decade myself.  I can't make up my mind on which way to go with it though.  I think I want to make it a Pro model but at the same time kinda leaning to keeping it all original.  Haven't made up my mind yet.  smile
