1973 Schwinn Stingray

a custom schwinn stingray turned race bike

i trade my friend a 99 gt performer f/f for this bike. he found on the side of a trail, all rusted. someone turned it into a lowrider, they painted it blue with a sparkle clear coat. when i received it i tore off everything and then repainted it. i added a astubulta fork to it. the "custom" part to the bike is the brakes. these bikes dont come with brake bridges. and me wanting to race/ride this bike couldn't deal with a coaster brake. so i managed to add a hand brake by setting the brake mount up with the fender mount.

Re: 1973 Schwinn Stingray

Awesome brake hanger / bridge 'construct'!  My first BMX was my old yellow sting-ray from like '72.  I couldn't get my folks to buy me the real deal, so i put knobbies on the old S steel rims , threw on a plastic molded BMX saddle, a set of BMX handlebars and grips.
Even though it was heavy as sin, I rode the rajulio hector de la hondo out of that beater for years. Learned how to wheelie and bunny hop on it.  First kiss ride, first 'over the bars' header crash, first job bike.  The coaster brake never gave out, but in later years it howled like a banshee.

The original MNT bike hill was named 'Mt. Repack' lovingly, for every downhill they did on their old 26' cruiser schwinns (sissy frames) set up with saddle, front hand brakes; they had to regrease the rear brake/hub afterwards.  They used those schwinn curved/sissy frames in this fashion for years.  COOL BEANS AND RAD REUSE OF THE COOLEST BIKE EVER!!!

Re: 1973 Schwinn Stingray

I've seen two pieces of steel cinched on the bridge before, but that looks so much nicer,

And like a whole lot of fun.

Re: 1973 Schwinn Stingray

Amazing Job on the rebuild , nice to know it performs well on the track .
That's a really good idea for the rear brake set-up , I've come across
that problem many times with old cruiser bicycles , etc ....
I'm gonna try that next time ... good one ! Thanks !
