I hear you... but, this forum is fairly quiet.. so we could just all come in here??????

So I can start... Got my new race bike done, it rocks. And my son got 2nd today in class (7 inter) at our local track.

Lots of great frames out there... I have 2 kids that race... 7 boy, and 7 girl. They are on their second bikes.. both Intense Podium Jr. XL's. My opinion has always been to find a frame thats close or a touch big, and roll with it. I really wish I would have waited and got some of Gregs GHP frames, they are sweet. In my area, supercross, Intense and Redline seem to be the favorites. My boy has been buggin' me to death about clips... he wants them so bad. I am not sure when a good time is to go for it...

I clipped my boy at the end of last season(he had raced for 1 1/2yrs). Once he had them dialed-LOOK OUT! He will be turning novice soon. I just made sure he had NO PROBLEM b4 we went to the track. You will have a ocasional gate prob the first few times but we like the clips.(just my opinion)
As far as frames go I want to build the BEST bike I can. I'am going to build a expert with 19 to 20" top tube. I like crupi but do not know anyone that has raced them. I also like GHP-INTENSE-FORMULA-and HYPER. Othere than the top tube and 1' head tube I really want a SHORT chainstay.(I think i like GHP & INTENSE for that old school Toby & Greg). Still need input before I buy.

Your GHP is awsome! How does your son like his intense. I think thats where I'am go'n, but a buddy of mine wants me to use his jr roadkill frame 4the rest of the season-may buy me time to OVER think this build!!!!!!!LOL

Ya thats now we've been do'n it-not changing to much. Right now he's riding a redline mini with ahost of good parts that he has been winnig on! But as I stated b4 its get'n small. I will only borrow the RL carbon forks and the FLY DY bars on the next one. Thanks 4your input.Later

I'm (40I) on GHP, my oldest daughter (11G) is on a Supercross, my middle daughter (10N) is on GHP, and my youngest daughter (5N) is on a Powerlite.

GHP is my frame sponsor, but even if they weren't, I couldn't say enough about these frames. To notch, best riding bike I've ever ridden.

On the clip issue, I made Charli wait until she turned girl before I clipped her in. I wanted her to learn basic racing skills in the Novice class (I'm talking ABA here) before moving up. I actually clipped her in on the day of her 8th win to move up. It was Friday night at the Silver Dollar Nationals. She hasn't made a main in Girl class yet, but she will. Our racing has been very limited since losing my job back in March so she hasn't had a lot of track time. My middle daughter has been bugging me about clipping in, but she is still a 0 win Novice and has a long way to go. Clips are such a big advantage that with them, I've seen kids blow through the Novice class only to get killed in Intermediate because they were depending on the clips and not their skills for wins.

This forum is pretty quiet, but there are a few of us still racing around here.

Hey there, my buddy has an Intense like yours (frame only) for his kid. What kind of headset are you using?

Is it a 1" steerer tube? Internal headset? I couldn't find a 1" internal headset when I looked.

Yes it is 1", and I used a Sinz headset. They make the integrated 1" set that you need.... FSA I heard also makes a 1", but havent seen it.

my son loves his HYPER as do I.I started racing in 1984 stopped around 91 and came back last year with my (now) 8 year old and having just as much fun.

Hey how are you and the other guys/parents doing?

I have my kid who is also very interested in racing(he is 8) and has been to a few track practices here in VA.
We have a mini redline-signature series that he plans on racing on the track, but could use a few upgrades.

I have an older Mongoose-motivator mini he uses for practice cause it's heavier.
I think and it looks to me like it helps him going from the heavier 1 to the lighter 1 on practice days and around the block.

My kid is scared of the gate!
He likes to do "roll thru's", Any help?

let him roll the gate,in time he will move along at his own pace.when my son started he would roll the gate and would not pedal until he was at the bottom of the starting hill.Not only that but he would sit down the whole race.his first race was last october.Now he is balancing on the gate and standing up through the whole race.He will make friends at the track and those new friends will help him overcome his fears.letting him move along at his own pace will keep it fun for him.If he complains about not winning just tell him he will need to pedal to win.I dont put any pressure on my boy.I cheer him on and I scream and yell during the race but thats it.He is now hooked on BMX.Good luck

I agree.  My 4yo like to roll also.  He would gate maybe 6 times a night at first.  Now after racing and making friends within a few weeks he asking to gate everytime.  He will still roll some, now he is very interested in getting the gate.  i still have to hold his back wheel, though.  Sorry, he just turned 5yo last week. 

I rode the track tonight for the first time ever.  Rode my old Robinson.  Wow, it was a blast. The kid next to me at the first gate says "You still remember how to ride that thing?" Showed him.   Our local track is very technical.  Desoto, TX @ Metroplex BMX.  I work the gate every so often also.  Great people.  Never raced as a kid.  I plan to ride with my son some more at practice night.  Still not sure about racing.  Cant afford to get hurt at my age.  Gotta work.

Like I said b4 - I'am having a blast w/my son @ the track(s). I'am now on the board @ the track I helped build when I was kid racing BITD. I get my fix w/my old school builds but I  to think its WAY more important 2b there for my son than for me 2b racing again. I've built a full auto practice gate 4him and a load of dirt should be delivered today for a dirt jump section.ENVOVLED is the way 2B!!!!!!!!
