1977 FMF

1977 FMF

1977 FMF Race Bike

1977 FMF Frame and FMF Pro bars. Redline forks (very early production) notice the long travel appearance, almost bottema style. Preston Petty Hex grips, Square Corner Tuff Neck Stem, Dura Ace Cranks, Reedy Pedals, Carlisle Aggressor Front Tire, Carlisle MX 200 Rear Tire, Araya 7B rims, and Bullseye hubs. I wanted one of these when I was a kid, but I was very hard on bikes. I broke my schwinn, I broke a moto bike, and was riding a stroker 2 when these came out. My dad told me no chance, it was only for racing and after the bike shop owner telling him I would break it in half, that ended that. So now I have one....
Today is 1/13/12 and I made some long awaited changes to my FMF with a new seat, a Carlislie MX 200 rear tire, and an NOS set of Reedy pedals.  I waited a long time to find these last few parts to finish it.

Re: 1977 FMF

Wow! FMF's are really cool... I remember seeing them BITD, but I only had my old Goose.

I sent away and got some FMF decals though! Put them on my DG pads that I put on my Goose... Ha!

Very nice clean build... cool

Re: 1977 FMF

I need to upload some new pics here soon.  I made a couple of small changes, but necessary.  I found a mint condition stamped pro neck to replace the polished one.  Found some early chain ring bolts that were more period correct.  I aslo took off the SST hubs and put on some nice bullseys.  I'm still looking for a nice old school black pad set for it.

As to the forks, no the plating isn't OG nickel.  When I got them they were bent and rusted.  A couple people I talked with told me they most likely came from the very first run of redline forks because of the "long travel look" like a motorcycle.   A friend of mine was able to straighten out the head tube with a little heat on the forks but the rust was pretty bad.  They were stripped and re done.  I know the purists frown on this type of thing, especially on something that rare.  But I think it's better to take care of something vs neglect it.  Anyhow, the forks on my 76 squareback are OG.  I just polish them up from time to time.

Re: 1977 FMF

I have a 1976 FMF Jr pro (red) in good condition. It has all non original parts. It was stolen from my older  brother in 1982 when I was about 6 years old but we recovered the frame from the thiefs after it was stripped of its parts.  So my big bro gave it to me and as i got older I had parts put on it but nothing original. Now Im 33 and a father of two boys who are into BMX. It would be awesome to strip it down to a bare frame and restore this vintage classic with original parts.  Great size for my five year old too. The jr pro only has a 17"TT.

Any one know where I can find the exact list of original parts and where to buy them. Or any other suggestions. If i have it repainted would that destroy the value? How would I even get the paint info to match the color( odd metallic red finish).  I will post picks once i retrieve it from my parents house where its been sitting in their garage.

99.9% sure its a fmf jr pro because it has the sticker on the side and looks like the others on the museum.

Funny thing is that my dad who bought it back in 1976 for my older brother always told me it was a redline and thats what i believed my entire childhood riding it?  Did the stock FMFs come with redline parts?
