1982 Healing HMX 500

1 owner New Zealand Legend

This model was the first 20inch BMX I ever rode, although Ive never owned an HMX until 2007 smile.  As you can see it was originally yellow in 1982 but my mate Jason who owns it later painted it blue.  I am currently restoring it back to original for him. The bike was purchased from Pegasus Cycles, Tuam Street, Christchurch, New Zealand. Jason still has the receipt and warranty card for the bike.

I got the frame powder coated by Powdertech in Christchurch. They were brilliant! When I sit the bike next to my own HMX the yellow matches exactly! The colour is called 'GOLDEN YELLOW' for those who have been wondering. $75 incl clear coat approx. Powdertech also have another yellow but dont get it! Its more of a canary yellow and totally wrong!
I will post more photos of bike when finished.

Re: 1982 Healing HMX 500

I just did an edit mate. The HMX isnt actually mine. It belongs to a good mate of mine. He has owned it since he was 4 and it was dumped in his parents shed so I asked if I could restore it for him. He still has the receipt from when his dad bought it for him and the warranty card. Came with a 1 year warranty. I love the old things! I cant wait until its rideable so I can cruise down the road on it smile

haha mate that brings back memories! I remember wizards and the dog house but I dont remember the bike shop. I didnt live in the city as a kid so I think I only ever went to wizards once or twice. As for the nomads, I had to wear them to school. It was great being an 80's child smile

I got some original cranks for the HMX today. Also some head tube stickers. The bike is coming together nicely. Just waiting for a paint now.

Re: 1982 Healing HMX 500

Note the big bug-eye reflectors on the back of this bike when it was new. Anyone else have them on their hmx?

Re: 1982 Healing HMX 500

Geez this brings back some memories. My first 20" Bike was a HMX500 which was initially came yellow, was then painted blue for my 6th Birthday, then Dayglow pink and white before we got rid of it. I only wish I had it now.
Well done on the resto so far.

Re: 1982 Healing HMX 500

Hi ya's ...I am interested to date the years of Healing bikes ...did the 500 come before the Supermax that they made ? I think they also made the NZ release of the MXIII
What model was built first ..or were they all built /sold in the same year ?

Hi all..

HMX 405 is first of the made in Tawian HMX's..405 was a bike shop model..505 was sold at Farmers and hayrights and were mostly all painted white..They also put out HMX 650's and HMX750's.

405 were mostly yellow and came in two types, coaster and free wheel..coaster has the welded on lug for the back pedal brake..freewheel doesnt..

I have a few frames HMX I'm getting acid bathed soon, then I will buy car paint to match and spray them up..colour might as well be bright, over the top with some 2 pak clear for that added shine..and new decals..

New |HMX 500/600 decals anyone they are moving..Will do deals for group buying..

HMX-500 was the cheapie with steel wheels
HMX-600 cost more came with Skyway Tuffs.
Supermax was top of the line with all alloy parts..

all models came out at same time.

Chrome ones were speacil for HMX  but the supermax2 did come from shops in chrome.
HMX-500 in chrome has black decals, same with the HMX-600 in chrome,,Most chrome supermax 2's had blue alloy parts..never seen or heard of a chrome supermax 1 or Mk1 HMX..they were all mk2's

Now Healing Redlines...Joke at the time was it was a Supermax with redline gusetts chromed..Now they also did what we called ozzie redlines..They had no Redline stamp underneath but had MX3 stickers..

I was selling Mk2 HMX's in 1980....from memeroy....But probley sold more mini-max's and pantha cubs from the shop I was working in

Actually its still not completely finished. Everything is there but me and my mate Jas just need to get together and put a little more time into it. It still gets admired all the time and has been hung up in a safe place;)
