1980 redline mx-III

fully restored redline mx-III. Almost got the parts where I'll keep them - but I threw on some stuff just to finish the build and take a pic. Going to be full red / white / blue - but the pedals, grips, and seatpost clamp haven't been found yet smile

Re: 1980 RedLine MX-III

Nice one Saylor, the powdercoat is supreme!

When I read about the hand linked chain in red, white and blue (before the picture loaded up) I thought "dear god no, don't tell me you pulled apart 3 chains and linked each link by hand in alternating colors!  I didn't think Texas got so cold that you had to hibernate over winter!"  I'm pleased to say I was wrong!  LOL

It did get me thinking though, chrome inner links, with each outer link alternating red, white and blue.  No, I don't have that much time on my hands either...

I note you said you're going to checker tape the headset cups - you could have done one in red anno and one in blue anno.  And cable clamps in red and blue!  Gotta keep the colour theme.

Cool thing about doing up a bike, you can so easily customise the thing for a bit of fun, and this looks great so far.  Nice work mate.

Lookin good. That chain is a nice touch.

What parts are you looking for?

Also, what was the inspiration for the build?

It seems there are a few mid/late 80's parts there

Re: 1980 RedLine MX-III

Hey - thanks.

I'm going to have 2 of those chains up for sale real soon - maybe this weekend.

I just got a redline seatpost / odyssey seatclamp / blue brake cables coming to me this week.

There is a mix of parts years there - partly b/c I couldn't wait another weekend to build it.
Partly b/c you recycled your parts - you never bought a complete bike - example - I had some Roger De Coster forks on my first BMX bike (mongoose) in 1979 and I kept those forks until my bike (Blazer) got ripped off in 1986 or 87 or whenever, so you could have different parts on a bike over a span of years and years.

The inspiration was a photo someone put up in BMX events past section (I think) - it was an old race photo - maybe Rabbit Run - but anyways a guy was on a white redline with a blue rim and a red rim... if you find the picture - it's the one that the kid has his blue jeans leg tucked into his sock - old-est school.

Thanks for looking - I'm real proud of this bike.

Anyone who may be interested:
I've got 2 of these red / white / blue chains left - 96 link KMC Z- Chain. Handbuilt by me. Pattern is 6 links / color. Chain was built out of 3 brand new chains.

Very nice Redline. It's a lot like my Pro-Line colorwise. Even the white frame/chrome fork look. tongue
