Re: HOW TO ** Remove Anodization **

My turn..

I really needed silver haro fusion pegs for one of my '99 masters. I found some in black so the search began and I found this thread.

My materials

Mixture
http://i857.photobucket.com/albums/ab137/leone4130/IMG_2431.jpg

Started taking the stickers off of the black pegs (these were brand new)
http://i857.photobucket.com/albums/ab137/leone4130/IMG_2430.jpg

Checking progress
http://i857.photobucket.com/albums/ab137/leone4130/IMG_2433.jpg

After a while, I cleaned her off and this is what we have! putting the stickers back on..
http://i857.photobucket.com/albums/ab137/leone4130/IMG_2432.jpg

One cleaned up and one just taken out of the solution

So here are all 4 pegs. The front ones were originally silver and they are NOS, the rear ones are the ones I removed the anodizing from

NICE tip there Jerz!!!!!  I should pull out my 2000 and ride it.  It just sits and begs to be taken for a spin or two.

Just read this entire thread and was looking to do this to a few parts. However, i want to have them reanodized. I didn't see a single example of someone who used this process and had the part reanodized. Anyone?

Thank you very much, I used the oven cleaner 30 years ago and I remember how you had to be careful with the blotching. I'll give this method a try sometime as I'm building a bike after a long time away.

So WARNING... the color on Victor pedals is not oxidization is candy paint... I ruined a set trying to get that off thinking it was anodized.

There, I fixed it for you.  That's right.  And neither is the color on Shimao DX pedals anodization, rather it too is paint.

Re: HOW TO ** Remove Anodization **

This was awesome!!!! I am in Germany and checked the military base for any dry form and didn't have any luck, but I hit up the German super market and got 2 lbs of crystal for 3 bucks and just did this in the driveway with a gladware container and some surgical gloves. Pretty amazing results and fast too.

Re: HOW TO ** Remove Anodization **

I remember doing this in the 80's with annodized parts. We used oven cleaner at that time. It was addicting!

Glad I'm seeing this newer method as I want to do a set of hoops that are like Araya 7x's...Sumo's. Looks like hoops are gonna be a pain!

its actually not that bad... i did some primo hoops in champagne for a shop build and they took less time than i expected.
i will say that i took a stronger solution to break down the ano.

Re: HOW TO ** Remove Anodization **

~10 minutes, but don't do it by the time.  You should be able to lift it and look at it.  It is easy to destroy a part.  You should see bubble action, etc.

Re: HOW TO ** Remove Anodization **

I don't know.  I just make a mix that the parts will fit in.  and immediately through my parts in.  Sometimes I pull them out, into a fresh bucket of water and tooth brush 'em a bit and back in they go.  I didn't refresh the batch half way in, just kept on going.

Re: HOW TO ** Remove Anodization **

I work for parks and rec in my town.... We had a memo and I saw it online too... There's been cases of plastic bottles left by mailboxes and in parks.....and when picked up it explodes and removes fingers and such !!!!  The cause is they are filled with some draino and a piece of aluminum foil. It reacts, but doesn't explode until it's disturbed.  So definately need to be careful and in a ventilated area when cleaning anno off aluminum parts with draino and similar.....

I had good results with 2 headsets, brakes, hubs, and seat clamp, but for some odd reason the ano wouldn't come off my pedals...

I got the same pedals on our '84 GT.  They're painted, not ano'd.  Maybe try paint remover?  But why...they look great.  You can't have 'em reano'd anyhow.
