1978 SE Racing BD-III

1978 SE Racing BD-III

I found this bike at the races and bought it for the handlebars. Then I found out the history of it and began a complete restoration. The parts are original to the bike except for the seat, handlebars, chain, & brake lever. Many people have given me the history on it and this seems to be one of just a few still around. The frame is a non serial number and the forks are 1978 GJS. This information comes from many sources and you can see a BD III on Joe Kid on a Stingray, then you can see the GJS forks after that segment. Any more information would be welcomed.

Great find!

Is that an OG color?

not an OG color, just something different from the blue/brown combo color scheme.

Re: 1978 SE Racing BD-III

hey man! I knew this kid, that I shared class with in 1st through 3rd grade back in about 1975 or 6. His name was Derick Brown.  Even at his young age,  he was considered a very sucessful pro. SE sponsored him,  He claimed the bike he rode was named after him. His bike sported the Roman Numerals ... IV preceeded by DB... as in DB IV !!!  give me a shout. This is the first time i`ve seen anything resembling that first bike in 30 plus years!!!

Re: 1978 SE Racing BD-III

This is the bike you are talking about. The BD III and the DB IV are the same bike. From what I have gathered the BD III is a 78 and the DB IV is a 79. In 1980 the bike became the mini ripper  (witha serial #) and Derek Brown started racing motorcycles and was very succesful. You can find more information on os-bmx.com. There is more pics of Derek Brown and more of the story over there. This bike has no serial number and that is what makes it a BD III or DB IV.  The forks are 78 GJS. I bought the bike from the original owner and both his kids raced it in Brookville, Ohio

yes they are off, someone hammered on the cranks and took the squareness out of the crank arm. It is at the fabricators getting fixed.

I picked one up a month ago or so. I want to do it Blue with DB IV decals. Mine doesn't have serial numbers either. http://i972.photobucket.com/albums/ae209/RacenJason93/Ripper/th_IMG_0749.jpg

Re: 1978 SE Racing BD-III

Locally, it is just frame. I would like to find the forks like you have. It has had the seat post rewelded. The guy was going to pitch it, because he didnt relize it had been fixed. I can't decide whether to have the seat post replaced. the weld around it looks good.

Re: 1978 SE Racing BD-III

If it looks good, just powder over it and start the build. Do you have forks for it now?  I was lucky mine was a complete race bike
from Brookville, OH. There were two brothers who rode the bike at the NBL track in Brookville. I changed a few parts on it and began the restoration project. It took about 6 months for me to complete it.

Re: 1978 SE Racing BD-III

I am hoping that in 2011 my son will be able to ride this bike and then ride it at the Brookville, OH ABA Track. This bike was raced there back in the 80's when it was an NBL track. Trying to keep this vintage SE bike on the race track where it belongs!!!

Re: 1978 SE Racing BD-III

thought id post little info here as i just obtain one of these..build in progress..photoes to come..

bmxultra.com: Ripper, Mini Ripper
Scot: This was an evolution frame. It started out as the GH Flyer, named after Greg Hill, who rode for me with my FMF brand. After winning the National Championships that year, we renamed all the bikes in the line to reflect our winning ways. The Mini was named the "Jr. Pro". Then I created SE and switched it to the BDIII (Breithaupt development 3rd version). When Derek Brown, a Hot Shop rider for us became full factory, I named the mini after him; "The DB IV" (4th version)... and after Derek went to motorcycles, we went to the Mini-Ripper...
Mike refined the bike over the years and made several versions for larger sizes and weights. It was and is a great bike for young bmxers.
