1981 Kuwahara KZ-2

My Sons New Race Bike.

In 1994 I was at a bicycle shop in Michigan when I came across this bike it had seen better days all the decals where torn up. The chrome was really pitted the tires where bald and flat the rims had a bad wobble. It had a set of Vector Pro handle bars when I bought it. The bike shop owner saw me looking at and told me that he would sell it to me for $15.00 dollars so i couldn't pass it up. I had planned on fixing it up back in 1994 but one thing led to another and it never happened. Well I moved and my mother put it above her garage for me along with my Mongoose. In 2007 my mother said she was having a garage sale and she had some of my stuff that she wanted to know if I wanted, well 13 years had passed and I had all of forgotten about these bikes. So when I went down there with my 7 year old son who was just getting into bmx racing, and I pulled down that Kuwahara my son just fell in love with that bike saying that he wanted to fix up it up and race that bike.
Well in 2008 me and my wife decided to rebuild the Kuwahara for him as a Christmas gift. He just about had a heart attack when he saw that bike setting by the Christmas tree. It's almost compleet where waiting closer to race season to pick out his cranks so that way we will get the right size. We also got him a old school lighting bolt pad set not shown.
Does any body else know of anyone racing these old school bicycles I like them alot more then the newer bikes it brings me back to the good old days.

Great story and very nice looking build!  The Kuwahara KZ- frame was a very smart design from the begining, because Kuwahara did not have a mini frame at that time late 1980-1982.  But, Kuwahara advertised that the KZ frame could be used with mini 1 3/8 tires and brake set up.

As you may already know, the kz-(1) and kz-(2) distinction explained the parts package that came on the bike.  Early Kuwaharas were sold as frame or frame and fork only at bike shops in the USA, later Kuwahara sold completes with either standard heay duty 1 piece cranks and heaavier wheels and stem thus kz-2 or a out of the box racer with suntour vx cranks and kkt pedals and irc tires thus kz-1 racer.

This is a great frame to race on, Kuwahara means "Mulberry Meadows" in Japanese.  The company is named after Mr. Sentaro Kuwahara, who started his bicycle company in 1918.  This frame is built like Samurai Sword and contains strength, reserve energy and the spirit of a champion in its' lineage and technical design.  Here is a great website where I learned a lot of information from.

Take care,

A video I put together for the local track my sons first big race and he crashed as you see in the video but I was proud that he finished the race no matter what place he came in never give up. Hell I'm 34 and just getting back into the sport talk about a good way to loose weight trying to keep up with these younger riders. I just rember being a kid, watching (BMX Bandits), (Rad) and I was hooked wanting to do what they were doing in those movies. If you ask me the Olympic Games stole the really high starting gate from Helltrack he he he he lol.

Re: 1981 Kuwahara KZ-2

Hey FastEddie55, Great story! I can relate! My boys started racing last year in the spring. My 8 year old started out racing an old Mongoose expert 1984 that I built for him, and my other boy,(10), started with a Haro Group 1 chromoly, early 90's. It was cool seeing them race old school, but I quickly gave into newer race bikes! My youngest would request to race the Mongoose on occasions. NICE! Yup, being in my 30's, I like seeing the older bikes in action, too!  Hope to post some of our bikes soon!
