1979 Schwinn Mag Scrambler
A tribute to my first bought BMX bike!
I picked this up from a Museum member red stick, he had two 1979 Schwinn Mag Scramblers he got from two brothers, they got them as Christmas presents from their parents in 1979, this one in Spicy Chesnut, and the other one in red. I ended up with both, couldn't let them part ways, they needed to stay together. Both bikes were pretty beat, and this one especially, the kid who had this really used her, stem was bent, bent bars, front rim had alloy replacement hubs installed sometime in it's life. I figured out a way to eliminate the thru bolt on replacement hubs, I drilled the holes in the rim larger and I pressed in a threaded steel bushing, allowing 10-32 screws to come in from both sides, you can't hardly tell. I took the bike apart, detailed the paint, Oxalic acid the chrome, re-blackened the Ashtabula Stem, powder coated the wide Schwinn bars(I added these, they ride better) powder coated the cranks, all Schwinn hardware was cad plated, the tuff wheels were bleached, dyed, and rebuilt, all the bearings re-greased, rebuilt the coaster brake, added new pedals, new chain, Kenda BMX Knobby tires, AME waffle grips, Team Schwinn Pad, and called it done. (Still need some top tube stickers!)This bike rides really nice and I love riding it, so does my 9 year old son, he wants one, if he only new what was in the attic for him for Christmas!
