1984 Mongoose Expert
Expert model from March, 1984. Purchased last year and built from then on. Hope to be riding it anytime this year. Hopefully next month!
I got this bike (minus the forks, seat post, and wheels!) back in May, 2012. Ever since I first saw a Mongoose they've been a dream to me. I used to race BMX back in the early 80's.
This BMX bike has original frame with all the Sakae/SR parts (cranks, pedals, stem), plus Tange TX1200 forks, aftermarket peregrine spoof wheels, Fishbone "skull" brake lever (the ONLY non-oldschool part that I really dig!), and a cheap bodypost with a cheap "rideable" seat. I also got me a SWEET NOS 1983 Sugino/Mongoose wheelchain to complete it (see 2nd picture).
So far the biggest misery to this one is the bars. Shipping costs for the original bars from the States here are crazy, not to mention the costs of the bars itself. So I got me this ugly one for less than four bucks in a local bike store. It was in the box of shitty parts. It will sure do the job but then again... I know it's NOT the correct one. :(
Next month I'll get the correct grips, a pair of decals for the forks (will it be correct if I use mongoose decals on the Tange forks?), and the correct (hopefully) Dia-compe MX brakes. I know I can not dream about original pads BUT... You don't know how happy an old dog like me can be finally touching my childhood dream.
I'm only $100 away to complete it!!!
Thank you guys for reading and sharing my immense bliss. You all have a GREAT Thursday!!! :)
PS. I now have two bikes... my two dreams from 1984! The Kuwahara Survivor 2.5AND
the Mongoose Expert... Can't believe it!
