1979 Mongoose Motomag
1979 Mongoose Motomag. 70's MX style build.
I started by purchasing the frame only for under $100.00. Spent a few weeks polishing up the dull nickel and realized it wasn't too bad. Still had no direction for the bike. Next I found the NOS Ashtabula forks with nice OG finish, found a set of correct fork decals and a decent reproduction Motomag decal set. I then realized my goal was to build up a 70's style Motomag but with beefy looking wire wheels. I wanted to go with the MX motocross 70's look so everything had to be era correct or as close as possible. I tried to find gently used or NOS parts to build this up and as close to late 70's as possible. Wheels came from a 79 Takara outlaw, refinished a set of Ashtabula cranks that had the Ashtabula in the drive side arm. Refinished a set of Mongoose box bars and stem as they were both pretty tough looking coming from a 81 Mongoose. In hindsight I probably could have gotten away the OG finish on the stem, but the cranks had rust and the bars had some layers of paint so they needed to be stripped. I used a AS seat Clamp and a Persons seat originally as the correct parts were so expensive. Took me about 4-5 months to find the original parts for the bike, refinish what I needed to and build it. I just can't see paying top dollar for all the parts, every part had a price I was willing to pay to build this bike and the original build total came in under $500.00. I let it sit like that for about a year, then this year I started refining a little, added a correct Mesinger Mongoose seat, a Mongoose stamped seat clamp, Chrome KKT rat traps to replace the black victors, added an NOS vinyl pad set, a Hunt Wilde number plate Correct Tange bottom Bracket and Tange Motocross Headset top nut. All name brand stamped correct stuff.
