2009 KGB Superpower
Martti Kuoppa's personal KGB Superpower frame set from 2008 in "Lakers" colourway, no serial number. Was also known as "New Superpower" for 2009.
This is Martti's personal KGB Superpower frame / fork / handlebar set from 2008 to 2009 in its distinctive "Lakers" colourway. The frame has no serial number or other markings. This frame set with all the parts was handed over to my collection by Martti himself as a very cool and totally unexpected christmas present! The "New Superpower" was released officially in 2009 while Martti rode this already in mid 2008. The model suffered its fair share of strength issues, where the most typical area of breakage was (obviously) the X-section in the middle of the frame where top and bottom tubes cross. Martti advised me not to ride this frame anymore as it's been thru a lot of abuse in his use and therefore might snap in two.
Generally speaking, when i am looking at modern flatland frames with all the curved tubing, fine welds and the plethora of colours, an "art sculpture" is the first thing that comes to mind. This beautiful creation, as much as it is a bicycle with specific purpose and stretched out functionality, it is also a work of art in its own right. We've come a long way from Torkers, Trickstars, Freestylers and World Tours. Sabbaths, Big Daddys and Shortys. This frame has appeared in various events, video clips and contests worldwide, including BMX Masters 2008 Cologne and BMX Worlds 2009 etc. etc. so it bears relatively short but very diverse history already.
This is one of my favorite clips of Martti riding this bike. Maybe not his best contest routine overall but check out the last trick...
