1976 JC Penney Eagle II
Catalog Clunker with sweet wheels!
I volunteer for a local bike collective, where we take in donated bikes (bound for the junkyard) and fix them up to give to kids and adults who need transportation. Sometimes we get a rare gem, like this one.
The bike itself, given the date on the Bendix coaster brake arm, appears to be 1976. It's a Huffy, made for JCP with the Eagle 2 name and JCP head sticker. The entire bike was in very good shape for its age, and all the parts were standard no-name generic ones save for the wheels.
Yes, those are genuine Motomag 2s! They are in near-mint condition, no breaks, no cracks, just the black paint was a bit dirty. No hand brakes were used on the bike, and the wheels spin nice and smooth. The front tire has a Cheng shin on it, the back a later tire.
I've been trying to find info on this bike to determine if the Motomag 2s were standard on this bike, or added on by the user. For a 38 year old bike, it was well-cared for.
The frame has dangerous-looking dropouts: crimped and tack-welded to the stays.
A Flickr user, Wishbook, has a collection of Sears, JCP, Ward's, and other catalog scans. Sadly, I can't find a blue Eagle 2, just a later version.
Any help identifying the year would be appreciated, as there is no serial # on the bike.
Of course, given the awesomeness of the wheels, I had to get them for myself. I'll likely put them on my old Nova, as I've always wanted a pair of these. I'll remove the paint and polish them up real nice.
