1994 ELF 24
1994 ELF 24" Cruiser - My 2nd attempt at a nice ELF 24" daily-rider/racer
My 2nd ELF 24" project in the last few years… Not quite ‘finished’, but it has grown into a super sweet ‘fair weather daily’ rider. Some parts were pirated(transferred) from other projects. The original basic bike, the wheels, JP Precision pieces, and various other ‘bits’ came from some of the great people here at the museum. Thanks.
I’m trying to break my ’weight weenie’ complex and built something a bit more realistic than my last big project… I still got this to be under 22lbs complete without going crazy on excessive(and expensive) titanium parts or super-light ’race only’ parts.
Here’s the nitty-gritty…
Frame / Fork - 1994 ELF 24” Cruiser - 100% 4130 Chromoly. I put fresh red decals on it less than a year ago…I went with red because on this one because all my other ELFs were blue or blue-fade. I wanted this one to be a bit different.
Pedals - Crupi Pro Round pedals w/Titanium spindles, 1st gen. Old School w/"body pins", upgraded with NOS cages, stainless cage screws instead of stock black-oxidized ones, and Titanium spindle bolts to replace stock steel spindle bolts. Fresh bearings too.
Bars - S & M Race Bars - Made in USA. 5.75” high, 28”-ish wide. Replaced the red/yellow S&M shield decals with a black one.
Stem - JP Precision… (some say “Pro”, some say “Expert”… all I know is it’s pro-sized, isn’t a mini or an XL, and it has the same exact same reach and similar width as a DK Pro stem)
Grips - DK Tsukas w/Lizard Skin ‘donuts’.
Brake - Tektro Pro Linear rear Brake set, polished, upgraded with Titanium bolt/nut set replacing the steel bolts for brake post mounts, cable “cinch bolt”, brake pad washers, and brake pad nuts. I also upgraded the black-steel “post washers” with silvers ones(came w/black ones).
Cranks - Profile Racing USA cranks - 175mm -
Bottom Bracket - Profile American w/standard spacers.
Wheels: Hubs - Early DK’s (Super smooth w/high quality Japanese sealed cartridge bearings). Rims - Sun Chinooks .
Tires - IRC Sirens in 24” x 1.75”.
Freewheel - White Industries Eno. 17T. Sealed bearings and Swiss watch precision. Made in the USA.
Front Sprocket - JP Precision ‘Buzzsaw’ 46T sprocket. (Yes, 46T is big, but it works great for high-speed paved trail & street cruising… i.e. trying to keep up w/my wife on her 700c single speed… I also have a 39T Rennen on-hand for actual ‘racing duty‘).
Seat - S & M thin seat - Obviously, not ‘correct’ or anything, but I love these because they’re light, look cool and are actually very comfortable for long rides.
Seat post - Origin 8 micro-adjust. 26.2mm diameter. Extra long 400mm length.
Seat post clamp- Stock machined aluminum ELF clamp. Super light.
Chain - YBN Super Hollow chain, with light-weight hollow pins.
